Chloe-Louise Scanlan

Chloe Louise Scanlan is an Irish visual artist who enjoys combining photography with sculpture, moving images, sound and various art mediums where appropriate. While her work is concerned with social commentary it also deals with self-expression and the celebration of the image as a physical object. Recently, her work has involved the analysis of virtual reality and online identity by looking at how these operate in society. Some of the themes her practice has covered deal with trauma and the alienated mind, urban loneliness, self-representation online and pictorialism. Chloe is a graduate of IADT Photography.

Where topics are driven by societal issues, it is through contemporary practices that she combines the fundamentals of surrealism with a documentary-style approach. Whilst the driving factor of her imagery is to evoke an emotion or memory, the intent is also for the work to be admired for its aesthetic value - celebrating the image as a physical object, a sculpture in its own right. It is through series and installation that she creates a sort of visual poetry for onlookers to comprehend.

Chloe Louise Scanlan Project Description

Chloe Louise Scanlan is an Irish artist who works with a variety of photographic mediums. Enjoying the poetic nature of photography, Scanlan works by constructing a series of illustrative narratives. Through themes of social reform, societal reflection and personal growth, Chloe delivers conversational messages of personal realisations. Chloe Scanlan’s project ‘Working Title’ explores the concepts of eco-psychology. By definition, this is the study of humans in association with nature in the context of mental health. ’Working Title’ concentrates on the psychological impact of architecture and urban planning on our subconscious mind. It is through expressions of shape, space and place that Scanlan explores the interpersonal impact of our surroundings. Eco-psychologists believe that reconnecting to nature can improve physical and mental well-being. ‘Working Title’ demonstrates some of the divisive barriers between homo sapiens and their earth in modern surroundings. Scanlan’s sculptural expression gives volume to her ideas allowing for a disruption to the mundanity of social order. “Working Title’ incorporates hand-printed images, polaroids and the written word to frame her dystopian view of humanity.
